If you are a regular reader of this blog, you will be familiar with pelvic floor physiotherapy. For others, I will briefly describe it here. Pelvic physiotherapy is the same as regular physiotherapy, with the addition of specialized training and legal authorization to perform internal exams.
What does this mean?
Your pelvic floor physiotherapist will have their own approach or philosophy according to their training and experience. This allows you to choose someone who aligns with your views and needs. On top of this, she will also be able to assess your pelvis internally to get a full picture of the muscles, nerves, joints, and structures that relate to your condition.
Physiotherapy in Calgary is offered both in the public and private health systems. Specific to pelvic floor physiotherapy, Alberta Health Services has programs and clinics that may be unknown to Calgarians or less well understood.
Pelvic Floor Clinic (Foothills Hospital)
The AHS pelvic floor clinic is located in the Women’s Health Centre at the Foothills Hospital. It is a multidisciplinary clinic that includes physiotherapists in its team. This clinic is a good option for those who require a pessary or have complex conditions that can be addressed in a team-based format.
Calgary Chronic Pain Centre
The second option for public pelvic physiotherapy is at the Chronic Pain Centre at Richmond Road (old Children’s Hospital). Here, physiotherapists work as part of a team to help people with pain conditions. These include chronic pelvic pain.
A main drawback to the public options is the wait times involved. In addition, our aim is to manage pelvic conditions before they become chronic and severe. Private physiotherapy is typically covered by extended health insurance and has much shorter wait times. Physiotherapy Alberta has a listing of all private women’s health physiotherapists in Calgary here. Note that this list does not distinguish between those who can and cannot perform internal exams.
At Vida Health & Wellness, we offer a unique patient-focused approach to physiotherapy, online booking, direct billing, free parking, a child-friendly space, and convenient appointment times. We are proud to be among the options for women to access timely and effective care for pelvic health conditions in Calgary.
At the end of the day, we all want the residents of Calgary and area to have access to the services they need. If you are unsure about which options are appropriate for you, please discuss them with your primary healthcare provider or contact us with your questions! We would love to help.
