Your first appointment will be 1.5 hours in length. The physiotherapist will gather information about your prolapse, medical history, symptoms, and treatments to date. She will perform a manual vagina and/or rectal exam, which will be fully discussed with you prior to proceeding. A speculum will be used to visualize the area where the pessary will sit.
The physiotherapist will then select a pessary type and size based on your anatomy and needs. She will insert the device and ask you to move in a variety of ways to check the fit. If needed, she may try more than one pessary. If a proper fit is ascertained, you will leave this appointment with follow-up instructions.
The next step will be to obtain medical clearance from your physician to wear a pessary in the long term. Your physician may also provide a prescription for the device if it is required for insurance benefit approval.
At your second visit, you will receive your own pessary. You will learn to insert, remove, and care for the device. This is an opportunity to ask questions and troubleshoot as needed. You can expect this second visit to take up to 1 hour.
Further follow up appointments can be booked for ongoing pessary support. You will also have regular checks with your physician to ensure that the vaginal tissues remain healthy as you use the pessary in everyday life.
The pessary fitting appointments are done by a physiotherapist and are eligible for extended health benefits. Direct billing is available.
